Substituting Adventures
Usually I try to have a photo with every post, but I'll just have to do without this time, as I can't very well take pics in a classroom.
So far this year I have had minimal luck with substituting, partly my own fault, partly someone else's fault. Haha ..
To explain a bit first: I have an app on my cell phone called "Frontline" to which I have been assigned a log in for our local school. This app presents to me sub job openings that teachers or paraprofessionals have posted on it. I am not sure if the app presents these job openings to the pool of subs on a seniority basis or not. It sends me text alerts when a job becomes available for me. I go in and check what and where the job is and can accept or reject at my own sweet will.
A couple of weeks ago a job called "health services director," or something similar, popped up for the grade school. I know that there are 2 nurses at the grade school so I thought, "well, they have obviously posted the position, so they must need someone to just sit in the office and answer phones, file paperwork, direct children, pass out aspirin...whatever." I accepted the job.
When I showed up for it last week I duly checked in with the office, where no one evidenced any surprise, went down to the nurse's offices and was met with astonishment by the lead nurse. She didn't know what to say really and was in denial that the spot was opened to a regular sub in the first place. The gist of her conversation amounted to; "h- no" and escorted me to the office. She was apologetic, but there was no way she was going to allow a sub in the nurses office that hadn't had the proper medical training. It turned out it was her new colleague who had entered the sub position into the general sub app instead of calling someone from their nurse's sub list. I'm fine with that, but I messaged the main substitute coordinator and asked if I would get compensation for showing up and then being sent home. She advised me that I'd get paid for half a day for it, but to contact them before I actually went home, they might have a position open for me.

I have had 3 other jobs; 2 at the grade school and one at the high school, one was just a half day. They were with SP-ED. Easy money. Frankly I enjoyed the high school SP-ED spot the most. I wish I could get more positions there. I have yet to attempt a spot for an actual teaching position. I have rejected a couple of them. Being the one in full control of an entire class of students is still a bit intimidating to me as of yet. The only thing is at the high school at least I'd get a new group of them every 50 minutes or so. That would be do-able I believe. I will have to get up the nerve to accept a spot soon. If I don't I might not get as much work as I was hoping to.
